Burbank soldier dies from non-combat injuries October 13, 2005 An Illinois Army National Guard soldier died in Iraq from a non-combat related injury, the Pentagon and the National Guard announced Thursday. Spc. James T. Grijalva, 26, who was from the Chicago suburb of Burbank, died Wednesday, said Lt. Tim Franklin of the Illinois National Guard. Franklin declined to give the cause of Grijalva's death, adding that it was under investigation. Grijalva's unit, the 2nd Battalion, 130th Infantry based in Urbana, left the state in January for training before arriving in Iraq in May. "Our hearts go out to the family and friends of this brave Illinois Guard soldier," Major Gen. Randal Thomas, adjutant general of the National Guard said in a statement. "On behalf of the men and women of the Illinois National Guard, I offer them my deepest condolences." Grijalva's family declined to comment on his death, referring inquiries to Franklin. A 1998 graduate of Chicago's Curie High School, Grijalva joined the Army in October 1999, and the Illinois National Guard in May 2004. He is the 13th Illinois National Guard casualty since the start of combat in Iraq. Curtsey from AP |
