 Killed in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle.

CPL Russell G. Culbertson II was born on 31 August 1984 in Pennsylvania.

CPL Culbertson entered the United States Army on 19 May 2004. He graduated Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Upon graduation he was assigned to 2nd Platoon Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 66th Armor, 4th Infantry Division. Later he was reassigned to 2nd Platoon Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas. He deployed to Iraq in December 2005 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

CPL Culbertsonís awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Army Achievement Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, and the Combat Action Badge. 

CPL Culbertson is survived by his parents Russell and Denise Culbertson of Amity, Pennsylvania.

Russell was the kind of soldier who could turn the most mundane of chores into something comical. He brought laughter and smiles to all those who had contact with him and he will be sorely missed by many.
