Sgt. William D. Brown III, 44, of Franklin, N.C., died Thursday in Gamberi in "a non-combat related incident," according to a statement that his unit released Monday. The Army is investigating his death, the Defense Department said. The Defense Department released his identity over the weekend. Brown was a health-care specialist who enlisted in the Army in May 2010, according to a statement released by the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, N.Y. After completing basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C., Brown was assigned to Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He then transferred to Fort Polk and arrived at the west-central Louisiana Army post in December. He was assigned to the 94th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division. He deployed to Afghanistan in July. Brown's decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Medal, the NATO Medal and the Certificate of Achievement, according to the Army. His other achievements included completing the Brigade Combat Team Trauma Course, the Warrior Leadership Course and the Combat Lifesavers Course, according to the Army. |

Brown III, 44, of Franklin, North Carolina died September 19 from a non-combat incident in Laghman Province, Afghanistan. Sergeant William D. Brown III was assigned to the 94th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Polk, Louisiana and was serving during Operation Enduring Freedom. Sergeant Brown was a healer. As a healer, he left his family and deployed to Afghanistan with his battalion in July, there to provide medical care for the men and women of his brigade. Brown joined the Army in May 2010. After completing training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina he was assigned to Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Brown arrived at Fort Polk in December 2012. Brown deployed with his unit to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in July 2013. Brown’s awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal and a Certificate of Achievement.
