Staff Sergeant Ryan F. Coyer passed away unexpectedly Monday, March 12 at the age of 26. Staff Sgt. Ryan F. Coyer, the son of Anthony and Mary (Carl) Coyer, was born Aug. 23, 1985 in Nashville, Tenn. He graduated from Arthur Hill High School in 2004. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in September of 2004. He completed One Station Unit Training, Basic Airborne Course, and Ranger Indoctrination Program at Ft. Benning, Ga. before being assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment at Hunter Army Airfield, Ga. in March of 2005.
Ryan served as rifleman and ammunition handler in Company A, gun and fire team leader in Company D. He also served as a sniper and RECCE member. Ryan’s last assignment was as NCOIC of the HHC Arms Room assigned to the 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Hunter Army Airfield, Ga. He had two deployments in Iraq and four to Afghanistan. His military education includes the Basic Airborne Course, Ranger Indoctrination Program, U.S. Army Ranger Course and Warrior Leader Course. Ryan’s awards and decorations include the Ranger Tab, Expert Infantry Badge and Parachutist Badge. He was also awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal second award, National Defense Service Medal, Afghan Campaign Medal with three service stars, Iraqi Campaign Medal with two service stars, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon and Overseas Service Ribbon.
Ryan loved weight lifting, riding his motorcycle and being with family and friends.
Surviving are his parents, Anthony and Mary Coyer of Saginaw, Mich.; sister, Lesleigh Coyer of Saginaw, Mich.; grandparents, Mona Ault of Saginaw, Mich. and Duane Coyer of Payson, Ariz.; Ryan’s aunts and uncles, Craig and Deborah Coyer, Robert and Heidi Coyer, Dr. Michael and Amy Carl, Bradley and Debra Carl, James and Janice Carl, William Carl and his fiancée Robin Hayes, Diane and Joseph Dyament, Steve and Marie Ault; many cousins and dear friends.
Ryan was preceded in death by his grandparents, William Ault and Ann Meldrum; and an uncle, Christopher Coyer.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.
