Michael P Bartley

Barnhill, Illinois

January 15, 2011

Age Military Rank Unit/Location
23 Army Sgt

1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division

Fort Hood, Texas

Killed in Mosul, Iraq, when an Iraqi soldier from the unit with which they were training shot them with small arms fire.

Soldier grew up in rural Illinois town
The Associated Press
An only child growing up in rural southern Illinois, Michael Bartley seemed like a perfect fit for the Army.
“He enlisted in the Army, and I thought, how appropriate,” David Savage, Bartley’s elementary school principal and the superintendent of Fairfield Schools, told WSIL-TV. “Their motto is to be all you can be. Michael lived that.”
A basketball player, Bartley graduated from Fairfield Community High School in 2007. His coach told the TV station he remembers his former player for his optimism and strong work ethic.
The 23-year-old from Barnhill, Ill., and another soldier were killed Jan. 15 in Mosul, Iraq, when an Iraqi soldier opened fire on them during a training exercise.
Rebecca Isles, Bartley’s mother, told the Evansville Courier-Press that her son joined the Army shortly after high school and later re-enlisted. He was on his second tour of duty in Iraq.
Bartley also was a member of Orchardville Community Church and returned to his hometown to visit friends and family.
“He was in his uniform and he looked so sharp,” Savage told the TV station. “We were so proud of him. And I told him, I said, you know Michael, this is a great accomplishment. And he said, ‘You know Mr. Savage. I’m really excited about this.’“
In addition to his mother, Bartley is survived by his father and grandmothers. He was assigned to Fort Hood, Texas.

We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Bartley Family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to troops in Afghanistan this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Michael P. Bartley US Army Sergeant. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.

It is with deep sadness that I offer condolences on the loss of your brave son, Michael. He was a true American Hero. Although I have experienced tragic losses, I cannot know the grief you are now experiencing at the loss of your son. There is no greater loss than that of a child - regardless of age. I know that we live in a safe democracy because of brave, selfless people like Michael. I am forever in debt to you and your son for his supreme sacrifice. My ongoing prayers are with you.

I know there are no words to say at this time, except how sorry that I am. I truly feel your loss and pain. My thoughts and prayers are with you always. Michael will never be forgotten.

For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

For those missing in action;
for those who didn’t make it home.
I know you’re in God’s presence you are not alone.
For every neatly folded flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.

I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.

I salute you .

Please know how Deeply Sorry I am, to learn of the loss of Sgt Michael Bartley.
As a parent, who has lost a daughter suddenly and having lost a brother to war...
I am aware of the deep and devastating pain that you are experiencing.
The overwhelming heartache, that seems to surface through our shock, as the time passes.
In the days ahead, you will be going through unimaginable grief, please hang on to your Faith and know that you will get through this.

May the memories of your Brave Young Soldier, remain in your heart always and give you strength through the difficult days and may Michael, rest safely now, in the Loving Care of God and know that he Will Never Be Forgotten.

I am the sister, of such a young Hero, who made the Ultimate Sacrifice in Vietnam, many years ago.

Never my soul, still the song,
Of wounded hearts, their loved one gone,
Of him who gave his life, for me,
That I might live, in liberty.

Sincerely hoping that you can feel the thoughts of caring and support that surround you today and in the days ahead, as this Grateful Country Mourns with you, for Someone Very Precious to you, Who Is A True American Hero to all of us.
My thoughts and prayers are with you.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to our Brother-in-Arms, SGT Michael Bartley. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Michael. And to Michael it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while deployed with the U.S. Army in Iraq. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Michael, you are a brave American Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,341 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Michael’s family and loved ones.
