A 29-year-old Green Beret from Glendale died Sunday while on patrol in Afghanistan, the Pentagon announced Wednesday.
Army Staff Sgt. Martin R. Apolinar and two other soldiers were traveling inside Wardak Province when their vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device, killing all three.
The Special Forces Command at Fort Bragg, N.C., said it had no further details of the incident. Apolinar's body will be escorted to the Valley as early as Friday.
Apolinar graduated from Phoenix's Trevor Browne High School in 2001. He enlisted in 2004 and was deployed to Iraq before serving in Afghanistan, receiving the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
Army officials said he is survived by his wife, Elisa, son, Martin, and parents, Gene and Susan Apolinar of Prescott. |
