| DATE POSTED: SEPTEMBER 24, 2004 PRESS RELEASE: Army Ranger killed in Iraq U.S. Army Special Operations Command Public Affairs Office FORT BRAGG, N.C. (USASOC News Service, Sept. 24, 2004) — A U.S. Army Ranger died Sept. 21 in Iraq after an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Pfc. Nathan E. Stahl, 20, an infantryman assigned to 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Fort Lewis, Wash., died of wounds sustained during the IED attack on his unit’s combat patrol in central Iraq. A native of Highland, Ind., Stahl enlisted in the Army in June 2003 shortly after graduating from Highland High School. After completing infantry, airborne and Ranger indoctrination training at Fort Benning, Ga., he was assigned to 2nd Bn., 75th Ranger Regt., in January 2004. Stahl deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom earlier this year. Stahl’s awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Combat Infantryman Badge and the Parachutist Badge. He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Towina G. Nightingale and Rodney Nightingale, of Highland, IN, and by his father and stepmother, Max E. Stahl and Virginia S. Stahl, of Clayton, NC. |
