FORT BRAGG, N.C. (USASOC News Service, July 6, 2004) — An Army Reserve civil affairs Soldier died July 4 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany from a non-combat related illness suffered one week earlier in Afghanistan.

Spc. Julie R. Hickey, 20, a civil affairs specialist assigned to the 412th Civil Affairs Battalion in Whitehall, Ohio, lost consciousness on June 28 while on duty in Asadabad, Afghanistan. She was medically evacuated to Germany on June 30, where she was pronounced dead July 4 from complications relating to her condition.

The cause of death is under investigation.

Hickey deployed in January 2004 to Afghanistan with the Webster, N.Y.-based 401st Civil Affairs Battalion in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and was assigned to the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Asadabad. 

Provincial Reconstruction Teams serve in regions across Afghanistan and act as a clearinghouse for assistance to the Afghan people and provide a secure environment for the Afghan government to begin providing basic services to its people.

A native of Galloway, Ohio, Hickey enlisted in the Army Reserve in June 2002 and later that year completed the 11-week Civil Affairs Specialist Course at Fort Bragg, N.C. She was assigned to the 412th in January 2003.

Her awards include the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.
