Imperial grad dies in Iraq

Wednesday, April 7, 2004 3:38 PM PDT

A U.S. Marine from Imperial was one of 12 soldiers killed in combat in Ramadi, Iraq, on Tuesday, the soldier's mother said this morning.

Lance Cpl. Marcus Cherry, 18, who graduated from Imperial High School last year and enlisted in the Marine Corps, died in an intense firefight near a U.S. compound, family said.

Details surrounding his death were unavailable from the Department of Defense this morning.

Imperial High School staffers said they planned to make an announcement at the high school at 10 this morning and the school would be calling in crisis counselors for those in need of such services.

An announcement was made at Centinela State Prison this morning, where members of Cherry's family work. Centinela officials said shock and sadness were spreading among prison staff.

Cherry's mother, Genevieve King, said this morning she was told of her son's death by Marine Corps representatives at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Cherry was an Imperial High School class of 2003 member and was on the varsity football team.

Cherry joined the Marines after graduation and was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines Echo Co. He was an infantryman and a fire team leader, said Cherry's stepfather, James Tyler.

Cherry has a brother, Andre, who is serving in Iraq, Tyler said. Andre was on his way home today, Tyler added.
