Near Abu Ghraib Prison, Iraq.  Potter was a member of a military police team searching the prison area.  During the search, his vehicle left the road and went into a canal.  SGT Potter died in the vehicle.  Two other soldiers escaped.

He was a friend of my husband's. He served in Iraq with my husband and was killed on Sept. 29, 2003.

Darrin K. Potter was outspoken, competitive, caring and intelligent, said Cheri Collett, a Louisville, Ky., police officer who trained at the police academy with him. On Sept. 29, Potter drowned after the Humvee he was in plunged into a canal in Baghdad. Another soldier died trying to rescue him.
