WHEREAS, United States Army Specialist Clarence Adams III, a resident of Richmond, died while supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom on September 7, 2004; and

WHEREAS, Clarence Adams was a star running back on the football team at Varina High School in Henrico County, where he rushed for more than 3,800 yards in four years, and later played for Virginia Union University; and

WHEREAS, Clarence Adams came from a family with a strong military tradition, and he followed in the footsteps of his grandfathers, who served in the Navy in World War II; his father, who served during the Vietnam War; and his older brother, who served in the Navy during the 1991 Persian Gulf War; and

WHEREAS, Specialist Clarence Adams, who had twice been deployed to Kosovo during the Serbian conflict, was assigned to the 91st Engineer Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas; and

WHEREAS, Specialist Clarence Adams died on September 7, 2004, of injuries sustained the previous day when his Humvee hit an improvised explosive device in Baghdad, Iraq; and

WHEREAS, Specialist Clarence Adams' death is a reminder of the perils faced daily by the thousands of young Americans who serve in our armed forces overseas and whose devotion to duty places them in harm's way; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a courageous and patriotic Virginian, Specialist Clarence Adams III; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Specialist Clarence Adams III as an expression of the high regard in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of Virginia.
