Second Valley soldier dies in Iraq

Pablo Manzano Jr., 19, a 2002 graduate of Southwest High School in El Centro, was killed Monday of a gunshot wound to the chest.

According to his family, Manzano was killed just a half-hour after speaking with his mother, Carmen, on the telephone.

"He told me that he was OK," she said Wednesday.

Pablo Manzano Sr. said he was promised his son would be kept away from dangerous operations because he was the only boy in the family. He added after his son was sent into Iraq he made the request through Congressman Bob Filner's (D-Chula Vista) office to have his son transferred to a different area but was told only his son could make that request.

When Pablo Manzano Sr. asked his son about it, his son replied the Army would have to transfer all his friends as well. Manzano wanted to stay with the other members of B Co.; his company.
